Vision Problems During Pregnancy
Are you pregnant? Did you know that vision problems during pregnancy may signal other health problems? Blurred vision or seeing spots may indicate gestational diabetes or pregnancy induced hypertension, an increase in blood pressure that usually occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy. Eclampsia and pre-eclampsia, caused by extremely high blood pressure, can cause eye hemorrhages and retinal detachment. Although these are not very common, it is important to be aware and take proper precaution.

Is dilation neccessary?
Whether eye dilation is necessary for every eye exam depends on the reason for your particular eye examination, your overall health and your risk of eye diseases based on family history. When you come in for an eye exam, special drops are used that causes your pupil to widen which allows the doctor to see clearly a view of the back of... your eye. The dilation process can help your doctor diagnose or monitor many diseases and conditions of the eye, such as (but not limited to) diabetes, eye malignancies, high blood pressure, infectious diseases, macular degeneration, and retinal tears or detachments.

Pinguecula
A pinguecula is a small, yellowish nodule on the conjunctiva, which is the clear tissue that lays over the white part of the eye. It is a very common, non-cancerous growth most commonly caused from long-term sunlight exposure and that may increase in size over many years. An eye examination is often enough to diagnose this disorder. Lubrication with artificial tears is the only treatment normally needed. Sunglasses are the essential to reduce the incidence of pinguecula. -Susan

Can Pregnancy Affect My Vision?
Changes in hormones, metabolism, fluid retention, and blood circulation can all affect your eyes and your vision during pregnancy. If you wear glasses, it's unlikely that you'll need to change your prescription, but it is possible. If you think your vision has changed significantly, have it checked. In most cases, these changes are temporary and will reverse themselves within several months of delivery! Best of luck!

Macular Drusen
Macular drusen can be one of the earliest symptoms of macular degeneration. Macular Drusen can be defined as small yellow spots in the eye which indicate damage to the retina. Wearing sunglasses, eating green leafy vegetables, not smoking, and taking the appropriate vitamins can help prevent drusen and the progression of macular degeneration. - Heather, clinical technician

Cinco De Mayo
Happy Cinco de Mayo! It is celebrated nationwide in the US and regionally in Mexico. Contrary to the popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day (Sept 16). On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army was victorious over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla. So today, we celebrate Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of their freedom and democracy.

Relay For Life
Our office participated in Relay for Life this past weekend. There were feelings of joy and optimism as we watched the courageous survivors walk, combined with sadness and reflection as we remembered our loved ones who have lost their battle. It is empowering to think about the positive impact of this event – to know that we are helping future generations, our children, and that together we might just help find a cure for cancer! Butterflies and Flowers
Is it true that we do not see some colors in flowers? Yes! Although flowers look vividly colored, they are better than they appear! Flowers, like daisies, have an attractive colored zone around center. This zone does not appear different from the surrounding color to us, but the butterflies can see more colors in that zone. This is a special gift to the butterflies, since they have taken up the job of pollination. -Melissa

Multiple Sclerosis
Throughout March, we are wearing orange to support finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Those with MS can suffer from an eye disorder called optic neuritis, or inflammation of the optic nerve or along the nerves that control eye movement. Normally affecting one eye at time, optic neuritis can cause blurred vision, loss of color vision, blind spots, complete or partial blindness, and pain behind the eyes. -Shannon

Corneal Ulcer
Please remember to always take your contacts out at night! Your eyes need oxygen to have strength to fight bacteria. A contact lens wearer can get a bacterial infection on the cornea, or a corneal ulcer, which can cause pain and often times permanent scarring and vision loss. – Ashley ** photo obtained from www.optometric.com

Spring Mission Project
106.9 is conducting their "Spring Mission Project". This year, they are raising awareness and support against the eye disease Trachoma. Trachoma, an eye infection found in environments where basic hygiene is lacking due to the scarcity of water, is easily transmitted. Left untreated, the eyelid will turn under, scar the cornea with every painful blink, and eventually cause blindness.

Clinical Case
Don’t wait for an eye injury to see the eye doctor! After removing a small imbedded fragment of metal from a patient’s eye, I examined the back of his eyes and noticed signs of glaucoma. After further testing, he did in fact have glaucoma and had already suffered significant vision loss. Due to the gradual and painless nature of glaucoma, he was unaware of the problem. With treatment and regular follow up, further vision loss may now be minimized. - Dr. Assell
