What is a cataract?

Did you know that cataract formation can result from exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun? A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that focuses light on the retina. If the lens is not clear, the retina will not receive a sharp image and vision will be blurry. Once a cataract matures, glasses will not improve vision and surgery is the only effective treatment. During cataract surgery, your cloudy lens will be removed and replaced with a new artificial lens. – Ashley Perry, clinical technician

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)

Are your contact lenses drying out during the day? Are they uncomfortable from the pollen build-up? We have the answer for you - Corneal Refractive Therapy, or CRT. Using specially designed oxygen permeable contact lenses, CRT non-surgically reshapes your cornea while you sleep. When you remove the lenses in the morning, you are able to see throughout the day without any other correction (this may take several nights of wear). Once optimal vision has been obtained initially, some patients only need to wear the lenses every other night. If you stop wearing the CRT contact lenses, your vision will gradually return to its original state. The CRT contact lenses are designed for individuals with low to moderate levels of nearsightedness (up to approximately -4.00 diopters) with or without mild astigmatism. There are no age restrictions. Ask us about Corneal Refractive Therapy, or CRT, at your next eye exam. -Ashley Perry, Optometric Technician

Corneal Abuse

Corneal Foreign Body - http://www.horizon-eye.com/images/corneal_foreign_body_2.jpg

With this beautiful weather, we're all spending more time outdoors working on our yards or playing on the lake! We can always tell that when we have more emergency eye appointments! Always remember to wear protective eyewear to prevent foreign bodies damaging your eyes and make sure that you practice good hygiene with your contact lenses. Wearing your contact lenses for too long or in dirty environments, like the lake, can lead to eye conditions that require treatment. Some of these conditions include
Corneal damage: Contact lens overuse, or corneas overexposed UV light, essentially starves the cornea of oxygen. The result: blurry vision, pain, excessive tearing, redness and sensitivity to light.
Corneal warping: This is a condition in which the cornea changes shape due to lack of oxygen from overwear. The result: uneven or fluctuating vision.
Bacterial, viral or fungal infections: Wearing your contact lenses for too long or in not-so-clean environments also can result in bacterial or fungal infections, especially in those who sleep in their contact lenses.

If you experience any of these syptoms you should remove the contact lenses immediately and call us before your vision is damaged permanently.

Relay for Life

Our office participated in Relay for Life this past weekend. There were feelings of joy and optimism as we watched the courageous survivors walk, combined with sadness and reflection as we remembered our loved ones who have lost their battle. It is empowering to think about the positive impact of this event – to know that we are helping future generations, our children, and that together we might just help find a cure for cancer!
