Nystagmus

Nystagmus is an involuntary, most often constant twitching back and forth, movement of the eyes which often reduces vision because it makes it difficult to look steadily at an object. It is also a common vision problem found in albinism, which results from abnormal development of both the retina and nerve connections ...between the eye and the brain. Although nystagmus normally occurs in infancy, you can also acquire nystagmus due to accidents or certain illnesses such as stroke or multiple sclerosis. Reduced vision may be improved with glasses and low vision aids, but nystagmus is permanent. The rapper from the Black Eyed Peas; Allan Pineda Lindo, is “legally blind” due to nystagmus.

Cookies for Cancer

Advanced Family Eye Care supports the mission of the American Cancer Society: to remember the ones we have lost, to celebrate the survivors, and to fight back for those who are suffering. We participate in Relay For Life and raise money to help find a cure for cancer. In order to raise extra money for the cause, our ...office will be holding events at the office periodically in the next couple of months. Today, we are selling cookies at our front desk (2 for a $1)! All of the proceeds will go directly to the cause. Please feel free to purchase them today at your eye exam, or even stop by just for a treat!

Visagraph

Advanced Family Eye Care/Sightwork is excited to announce our newest piece of equipment for vision therapy evaluations - a Visagraph. The visagraph is an eye movement recording system with an analysis software system which makes it easy to evaluate overall reading skills. The system records eye movements while reading a short text on paper. The eye movement pattern is analyzed, and a number of reading characteristics are calculated automatically with respect to time. The actual eye movements can be superimposed on the text and played back in real time or more slowly for evaluation. If you, or your child’s teacher, has concerns regarding reading skills including fluency, tracking, words per minute, and/or comprehension, call our office to schedule a Visagraph/Reading consult today.

Glaucoma Awareness Month

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness in the US, is a disease of the optic nerve that starts by damaging the peripheral vision and eventually leads to total blindness. There are often no symptoms or pain associated with the onset of glaucoma. The silent disease affects m...ore than 3 million Americans, but over half of them don’t even know it that they have it, according to Prevent Blindness America. Vision loss from glaucoma cannot be restored, which is why early detection is so important. If glaucoma is detected early, there is treatment available – such as medicines, laser surgery, and/or conventional surgery - to slow or stop vision loss and reduce the risk of blindness. While anyone can get glaucoma, individuals at higher risk include African Americans over age 40, everyone over age 60, people who have had severe eye trauma, or those with a family history of glaucoma.
