And the winner is...
Check out Dr. Hoyle in her new GREEN glasses! We did a poll online to see what glasses everyone preferred on her and this was the pair that won. She is wearing a frame from the Kishimoto Collection of Global Optique. This is a new line that we are carrying at our office. They are stylish and affordable. Dr. Hoyle wears her glasses here at work while working on the computer and even seeing patients! She can also go casual and wear her glasses on a night out. She looks GREAT in her new glasses, and you will too. Stop by our office to try a pair on today! – Heather Miskell, Optometric Assistant
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
We are proud to offer a glimpse into the future of eye care with a new retinal scanner utilizing technology called optical coherence tomography, or OCT for short. In fact, this Thursday will be our OCT day! The OCT retinal scanner is able to take a rapid, high-def biopsy of your retina, making the retina's inner workings transparent to a degree unimaginable even a few years ago. After examining a slice of your retina, the multi-layered sensory tissue lining the back of the eye, we are able to determine the cause of many vision problems. The OCT retinal scanner is quick, safe, and never touches the eye. It provides cross-sectional images of the retina that are revolutionizing the early detection and treatment of eye conditions such as macular holes, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. –Dr. Mike Assell

Permanent Eyeliner
Are you tired of putting on eyeliner every morning? We have a solution for you! You can have eyeliner apllied permanently! Both Dr. Barker and Dr. Hoyle have had it done. Dr. Hoyle comments, "I absolutely love it. It's one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!" We send our patients to Karen at Graystone Eye in Hickory. The procedure only takes about an hour with another one hour follow up a few weeks later. It's simple...and it looks real!

Why should your child regularly see the eye doctor?
I recently saw an 8yo girl for her first eye examination. She had been complaining about blurred vision in her right eye so her mom scheduled a visit. Because there was no family history of eye disease, no previous visual complaint, or no cosmetic concerns (such as an eye turn), her parents had no apparent reason to schedule an eye examination. During her initial work up, we noted that she could only see light and some peripheral movement with her right eye. The left eye was normal aside from some mild nearsightedness. During the dilated part of the examination, a large central scar was noted in the retina. This scar was determined to be inflammatory in nature possibly from a past virus or toxoplasmosis. If this was diagnosed during the inflammatory stage, treatment could have been administered to possibly allow for a better visual outcome. Without any eye health history or documentation, it becomes difficult to determine how long a condition has been going on and where to begin with treatment. While there are future risks for her such as reactivation of a virus or a retinal detachment, this condition is unlikely to progress. Vision cannot be restored in the right eye at this point. I hope to encourage all parents to have your children’s eye checked at 6-9 months, 3 years, and 5years even if there are no visual complaints or history. Routine eye health exams are important for many reasons beyond 20/20. - Dr. Amanda Barker-Assell

Allergy Eyes
Does your car look like this? Allergy season is definitely here! Not only is the pollen all over our cars, but it's affecting our eyes, too! They're red, ithcy, swollen, watery, dry...you name it! It can make wearing contact lenses unpleasant, if not treated properly. This is a great time of year for contact lens wearers to try Focus Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus lenses. These are contact lenses that you wear for one day throwing them away at night, allowing you to put in a brand new, fresh lens, without pollen, each day. Not to mention, an eye drop called Pataday that you use just once a day can be prescribed by our doctors to provide instant relief to your allergy eyes. -Heather Miskell, Optometric Assistant
