Does stress really affect vision?

Stress can affect your body in many interesting ways. Individuals who experience high levels of psychological or physiologic stress have increased endogenous cortisol levels. Increased cortisol can cause a condition in the eye called Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR). CSR presents as dim or blurred vision that distort objects or make them appear “washed out.” Distorted vision is due to leakage of fluid in the subretinal tissue. It typically happens in one eye at a time and most often affects males 25-50 years of age. In most cases , CSR resolves with no long term vision loss; however, it can take months for resolution. We have sophisticated equipment that can locate the swelling or fluid and monitor for resolution over time. I have attached images of a recent patient with CSR in the left eye. Note the difference between images in the right and left retina.

Black History Month

Happy President's Day! We celebrate Black History Month in February. February was selected because it corresponds with the birthdays of two important people who contributed to black history: President Abraham Lincoln and political activist Fredrick Douglass. Recognizing Black History Month gives everyone of all races a chance to be inspired by great people and their accomplishments, regardless of color. - Chica

Allergy Eyes

Spring is approaching….and so is the allergy season! Allergens such as pollen, grass, weeds and dust can affect the ocular conjunctiva, a clear layer of skin overlying the eyes. Unfortunately, avoidance of the allergen(s) is not always easy or possible. Cold compresses and lubricating eye drops can be used to flush out... allergens and reduce your symptoms. For further relief, come see us for more options such as prescription allergy medications!

Language of Love

How was your date with your Valentine? Did you know that the eyes have their own "language of love"? Here are some clues to let you know that love is in the air:

•Rapid blinking may indicate that someone is attracted to you.
•If someone has a crush on you and has insecurities, you may notice a lack of eye contact from the person.
•Winking may mean someone is trying to let you know he/she is interested in you.
•Intense eye contact, especially with a smile, may mean the person has a crush on you.
•Glistening eyes can signify strong love emotions.
•Pupil size increases means the person likes what he/she sees.

Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month

February is Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) Awareness Month. ARMD is a medical condition which usually affects older adults. It begins with characteristic yellow deposits in the macula (central area of the retina) called drusen. This drusen can progress to retinal damage resulting in the loss of vision in th...e center of the visual field. Macular degeneration can make it difficult to read or recognize faces, although enough peripheral vision remains to allow other activities of daily life. To schedule your comprehensive eye examination (includes a full retinal evaluation), please call our office at 704-822-9920.
