Community Service at Advanced Family Eye Care

On Friday June 25th the doctors and staff of Advanced Family Eye Care provided free eye care and glasses for an organization called Solace for the Children. This organization brings children from Afghanistan to America for medical treatment not readily available to them in their country. All children receive eye exams, dental exams and routine physical examinations. The services are donated to the organization to help fulfill their mission to “build peace on a foundation of health.” Advanced Family Eye Care was thrilled to participate in this mission. Nine of the twenty children needed glasses and two children were referred for some form of eye surgery.

Ocular Migraines

An ocular migraine is a painless condition that causes visual disturbances such as a blind spot with flickering lights or a shimmering zig-zag pattern that often times move across your field of vision. Ocular migraines, caused by changes in blood flow, usually last 15-30 minutes. Although these symptoms can be alarmi...ng, ocular migraines are generally harmless. However, it’s always best to consult your eye doctor when you have unusual vision symptoms as they can sometimes indicate more serious conditions such as a detaching retina, which needs immediate attention. -Dr. Assell

Legal Blindness

Ever wonder what legal Blindness really means? Legal blindness means 20/200 or worse vision in the better eye with corrective lenses. 20/200 means that a person at 20 feet from an eye chart can see what a person with normal vision can see at 200 feet. Legal blindness can also mean a visual field that is restricted to 2...0 degrees diameter or less in the better eye. -Amber Smith, Optometric Technician

Floaters

Floaters, or small particles or strands in your vision, are usually caused by normal deterioration of the clear, jelly-like fluid (vitreous) that makes up the volume of the eye. If you notice a sudden change in the number of floaters or if you also see flashes of light, call us right away to determine if they are the result of a more serious problem. -Jennifer Speight

What is 20/20 Vision?

Ever wondered what 20/20 vision really means? 20/20 is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet. –Melissa Stoltz, Optometric Assistant

Nearsighted vs. Farsighted

What is the difference between being nearsighted and farsighted? Nearsighted is when objects viewed close up are clear, but things far away are blurry. This usually occurs when the eye is longer than average. Farsighted is when objects viewed far away are clear, but things up close are blurry. This occurs when the eye is shorter than average. Glasses and/or contact lenses, in most cases, can help nearsightedness and farsightedness. -Brooke Fish, Optometric Assistant
